Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to the equine world, when considering the best choice of bedding for your horse, it is important that you do your research. Horses are bright, passionate and intelligent creatures and it is important for you to create a warm and welcoming stable space. If your animal doesn’t like the bedding you have chosen for them, it may be better for you to cut your losses and try something new. We know how important it is for you to pay close attention to the health and wellbeing of your horse.
At Dollar Bedding we have extensive experience in the supply of high quality horse and animal bedding across the UK, as well as internationally. We’ve answered all of our customers frequently asked questions about choosing the right type of bedding for your animal. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
WHAT TYPES OF HORSE BEDDING DO YOU OFFER?
We stock and supply three main types of horse bedding.
- Cotton Paper Beddingis a white, soft and ink free bedding that is highly absorbent and more durable than normal wood fibre paper. This bedding is ideal for animal sleeping areas.
- Medium Flake Wood Shavings are produced from freshly felled softwood timber. These high quality flakes are kiln dried and dust extracted for longer lasting bedding.
- Small Flake Wood Shavings consist of a chip and shavings mix. As well as having a low moisture content and being highly absorbent, our small flake shavings are also eco-friendly and long lasting.

WHAT ABOUT ASTHMATIC HORSES AND HORSES WITH DUST ALLERGIES?
All of our bedding types are dust extracted, meaning that special care has been taken to make sure that it is safe for all horses to use. Horses with asthma and dust allergies have no problem with our dust extracted, allergy free and environmentally friendly bedding.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SMALL AND MEDIUM FLAKE BEDDING?
Both of our flake wood shavings provide excellent comfort and absorption in bedding areas, though they are made from different materials. Small flake bedding is a mixture of chip and shavings and provides a slightly softer bed while still being absorbent. Medium flake bedding is made from flakes of soft wood. The medium flakes help keep the bedding in place. Both types are kiln dried for a lower moisture content.
DO YOU SUPPLY BEDDING FOR OTHER PETS?
Our cotton paper bedding is also suitable for smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and more. Please check with our experts before ordering bedding for smaller animals, so that we can make sure you get the perfect bedding type for your pet.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND THE BEST BEDDING FOR ____ BREED?
At Dollar Bedding our team of experienced professionals can advise you on what type of bedding your horse needs. We understand that different animals or breeds may have different needs. If you are concerned about a particular breed or need advice, please contact our team of experts. Our sponsored riders Georgie Crumley, Lynn Russell and Robert Whitaker can attest to our experience and are supporters of our products. More information on our partner riders can be found on the ‘Sponsored Riders’ page.
HOW SHOULD I STORE THE BEDDING?
It is important that the bedding is stored in a cool dry place so that you get the very best out of your purchase. All of our bedding is kiln dried and individually wrapped in bales to preserve the freshness. Our pallets are shrink wrapped, so larger orders are suitable for outside storage. Our bedding has a lower moisture content, so it gets tightly packed offering you more bedding for your money. Perfect!
CAN I COMBINE BEDDING TYPES?
If you’re not sure whether or not just one style of bedding will best suit your horse, you can combine bedding types. This is particularly helpful for horse owners with a smaller budget, or if you want to gradually try switching to an alternative type of bedding. Rubber mat flooring is best used in conjunction with another type of bedding, to ensure good comfort for your horse.
